The Drama of Smaller European Languages project is in full swing. Today, a press conference was held in Kranj, Slovenia, where the program of the 55th Week of Slovenian Drama was presented by the festival selector Alja Predan and acting director of the Prešeren Theatre Kranj Rok Bozovičar. The upcoming festival will also host the first DoSEL International Showcase, presenting four performances originally written and performed in a smaller European language.
Organised annually by the Prešeren Theatre Kranj since 1971, the prestigious theatre festival Week of Slovenian Drama presents the most successful performances based on a Slovenian play or text staged by Slovene theatres in the last season.
The 55th Week of Slovenian Drama will take place from 27th March to 12th April 2025 and will host 16 performances based on Slovenian texts, among which seven are in the main programme, five in the accompanying programme and four in the programme for youth. But this year the festival will be enriched by a selection of four international performances coming from Kosovo, Bulgaria, Malta, and Spain:
- Ismail Kadare: The Traitor’s Niche, dramatisation by Doruntina Basha, directed by Kushtrim Koliqi, produced by National Theatre of Kosovo, Prishtina, Kosovo
- Thea Denoljubova: Oh My God, direction and stage version by Stoyan Radev, produced by Ivan Vazov National Theatre, Sofia, Bulgaria
- André Mangion: Drago, direction and concept by Sean Buhagiar, produced by Teatru Malta, Valletta Cultural Agency, Malta
- Pere Riera: Casa Calores, direction by Pere Riera, produced by Sala Beckett, Barcelona, Spain
The performances, produced by DoSEL partner theatres will be performed in Albanian, Bulgarian, Maltese and Catalan languages with English and Slovenian subtitles. The DoSEL International Showcase programme will also host a translingual workshop with an international cast of artists who will start their work this March in Kranj and present their research at a festival in Malta in a year, round table discussions, a public presentation of the DoSEL project and more.
